Noise exposure is one of the leading causes of permanent hearing loss at any age, and it is entirely preventable. The damage accumulates quietly — often without pain or obvious warning — and by the time you notice it, some of it cannot be reversed. The hearing nerve cells that process loud sound do not regenerate once they are damaged. Repeated exposure — even at levels that do not feel painful — adds up over time and produces a permanent shift in what you can hear. Custom hearing protection addresses this directly by giving you a reliable, consistent barrier you can wear comfortably through a full shift, a full set, or a full night, so protection stops being something you negotiate with yourself about.
Most people start with foam drugstore earplugs because they are convenient and inexpensive. The problem is that a foam plug is shaped for an average ear, not your ear. It compresses unevenly, works its way loose, and either lets in more sound than you realize or blocks so much that you pull it out to hear a conversation. A custom Westone earmold is taken from a physical impression of your own ear canal and outer ear, then manufactured to match that exact shape. The result is a seal that stays consistent, a fit that stays comfortable for hours, and protection you will actually keep in rather than pocket. Westone designs specific products for specific uses rather than making one plug that tries to do everything — because the right filter for a musician is different from the right seal for a swimmer, and what a construction worker needs over an eight-hour shift is different from a sleeping aid.
Musician earmolds use acoustic filters — ER-9, ER-15, or ER-25 — where the number tells you how much sound the filter removes while keeping the frequency balance of music natural. A standard foam plug cuts high frequencies far more than low ones, which makes music sound muffled and distorted. A filtered musician plug reduces volume evenly so you hear the mix accurately at a safer level. We help you choose the right filter based on how loud your environment typically is and how much monitoring you need to do.
Westone makes products designed around specific conditions: solid earmolds for industrial noise and shooting that block sound consistently, floatable plugs for swimming and surfing that keep water out without full occlusion, and low-profile sleep plugs shaped to stay comfortable when you are lying on your side. We ask about your actual situation — what you do, how long you do it, and what you need to hear or not hear — before recommending a product. That conversation takes a few minutes and saves you from buying protection that does not suit how you use it.
If you wear hearing aids or in-ear monitors, a precise earmold makes a significant difference in how well they perform. An ill-fitting hearing aid earmold causes feedback and lets amplified sound escape before it reaches the eardrum; a custom fit eliminates that gap. In-ear monitor earmolds work the same way — the seal is what isolates stage sound and lets you lower the monitor volume instead of fighting background noise. We take impressions for both and coordinate with your existing devices or earphone manufacturer as needed.
The appointment takes about 20 to 30 minutes. We start with a visual check of your ear canals to make sure they are clear and healthy, then place a small foam or cotton block to protect the eardrum, inject a soft silicone impression material into the canal and concha, and let it set for a few minutes before removing it. The impression goes to Westone, where it is used to manufacture your earmolds to that exact shape. When they come back, we check the fit in office and make any minor adjustments before you leave. Many patients visiting us from Coronado or across San Diego County combine this visit with a routine hearing checkup.
Custom earmolds last for years with basic upkeep. Wipe them down after each use with a soft cloth or the cleaning tool that comes with them, and store them in their case when you are not wearing them. Avoid leaving them in a hot car or direct sunlight, which can degrade the material over time. If your ear canal shape changes significantly — which can happen after significant weight change or as you age — bring them back and we can assess whether a new impression is needed.
